Toddler Sunglasses for Aussie 3–5 Year Olds 11

The toddler years are tough on sunglasses. Daycare drop-offs, playground tumbles, beach days, the back-seat fling - anything on a 3-year-old's face is being tested by next week. Our toddler sunglasses are made for that reality: bendable TPEE frames that flex instead of snap, UV400 polarised lenses with Category 3 density, and sizing built specifically for 3 to 5 year olds. Why toddlers need their own sunglasses

By age three, kids are spending serious time outside — daycare yards, playgrounds, beaches. Australia has one of the harshest UV environments in the world, and toddler eyes are still developing. The natural pigment that filters harmful wavelengths in adult lenses hasn't fully built up yet. Without proper protection, the damage stacks up year after year.

Adult sunglasses don't fit a 3-year-old's face properly. They slip, pinch, or have lenses too small to cover the eye. Toddlers need narrower bridges, shorter temples, lighter weight — and frames that survive the way 3-year-olds actually handle things.

What Cancer Council Australia recommends

Cancer Council Australia recommends UV protection for children whenever the UV index sits at 3 or higher - which, in most of the country, means every day from about 9am to 4pm, October through March. Their standard for kids' sunglasses is UV400 protection meeting AS/NZS 1067, ideally with Category 2 or 3 lens density. Every pair in our toddler range meets that spec. If you want the full guidance, the Cancer Council's sun protection resources are the clearest plain-English summary we've found.

What to look for in toddler sunglasses

A good pair of toddler sunglasses earns its keep on four things: how much UV the lenses actually block, what the frames are made of, whether they fit properly, and whether your kid will agree to wear them. Most cheap toddler sunnies fail on at least one. Here's what we'd check before buying any pair - ours or anyone else's.

Really happy with these sunnies. They're lightweight, and totally bendable. Great UV protection too. My toddler loves wearing them!

How to get a toddler to keep their sunglasses on

Start at home. Five minutes on the couch before outdoor wear.
Wear yours too. Toddlers copy.
Use the strap during learning. Phase out once the habit sticks.
Let them pick the colour. A pair they chose gets worn more.
Don't push on bad days. Some days are sunnies days, some aren't.

FAQ

What age does a toddler need sunglasses?

From around 18 months to 2 years, when the nose bridge can reliably support a frame. By age 3 most kids fit standard toddler-sized sunglasses comfortably. If your 12-month-old is in direct sun often, the baby range (0–2) starts earlier - most fits work from six months on.

Are sunglasses safe for toddlers?

Yes, provided the frames are well-made. Look for BPA-free materials (we use TPEE, the same material as sports mouthguards), no metal hinges that could pinch, and no sharp edges. UV400 lenses are a safety standard for blocking ultraviolet light, not a chemical or material risk - the protection itself is straightforward.

How do I get my toddler to keep their sunglasses on?

Start short - five or ten minutes at home before outdoor wear. Use a strap during the learning phase. Wear your own sunglasses, since toddlers mirror what they see. Let them pick the colour or pattern. Don't push through tantrums; the habit builds across weeks, not days.

What size sunglasses fit a 3 year old?

Our 3–5 toddler range is sized for an average head circumference of 50–52cm, which fits most kids from around three years old. If your toddler is on the smaller side or you're buying ahead, go with a strapped pair - the elastic adjusts as the head grows. Sizing is consistent across the keyhole, heart, and hexagon styles

Should toddler sunglasses have a strap?

For kids new to sunglasses or under age 3, yes - the strap keeps them on through tumbles and getting in and out of car seats. Around age 4 most kids can handle a no-strap pair once the wearing habit is set. Our 3–5 range includes both strapped and strap-free options. Pick based on your kid's stage rather than their age alone.

What if my toddler breaks their sunglasses?

Every pair of Lūmmi Bunny sunglasses is covered by our 12-month Lūmmi Care promise. If they break under normal wear, we replace them. No proof of purchase needed, no fine print.
