How to get a toddler to keep their sunglasses on
FAQ
What age does a toddler need sunglasses?
If you started your child on sunglasses as a baby, you're already ahead. If you're starting fresh at 2 or 3, that's fine too - toddlers adjust quickly when the sunnies become part of the daily routine alongside their hat and sunscreen.
Age 2-3: building the reflex
This is the age where habit takes root. Keep sunglasses in the pram, the car, and the daycare bag. Praise every time they wear them. Don't fight nap time - sunnies come off, sunnies go back on.
Age 3-4: independence
Toddlers this age will often ask for their sunglasses without prompting once the habit is in. Let them help pick the colour. Kids who choose their sunnies wear them more.
Age 4-5: transitioning to kids' sizing
Around this point, most kids graduate from toddler sizing to our kids' range (3-5) or junior range (6+). Head circumference is the main check - if the toddler pair pinches at the temples or slides off the nose, size up.
Are sunglasses safe for toddlers?
Yes, provided the frames are well-made. Look for BPA-free materials (we use TPEE, the same material as sports mouthguards), no metal hinges that could pinch, and no sharp edges. UV400 lenses are a safety standard for blocking ultraviolet light, not a chemical or material risk - the protection itself is straightforward.
What to look for in toddler sunglasses
Polarised lenses for real Aussie glare
Reflected glare off water, sand, road, and car bonnets makes toddlers squint - and a squinting toddler is a toddler who pulls their sunnies off. Polarised lenses cut that glare so kids can actually see what they're looking at. Our toddler range uses Category 3 polarised lenses - the density rating recommended for high-glare environments like the Australian coast.
Flexible frames that survive real toddler life
Toddlers don't remove sunglasses gently. They yank, twist, and forget where they put them. Our flexible frames are designed to bend under stress and return to shape - so a pair that gets sat on at daycare doesn't become a pair that gets binned. No metal hinges, no snap points, no sharp edges.
Sized for actual toddler faces
Toddler frames are not baby frames scaled up. Bridge widths, arm lengths, and lens curves are all set for the head shape and nose profile of a 2-4 year old. Adult sunglasses shrunk down sit wrong, slide off, and pinch. Ours don't.
How to keep sunglasses on a toddler (a survival guide)
Involve them in choosing. Toddlers who pick their own sunnies wear them.
Wear yours. Nothing motivates a 2-year-old like copying a parent.
Make it a routine, not a request. Hat, sunnies, sunscreen - one sentence, every time.
Have a backup pair. Toddlers lose things. A spare in the daycare bag and the car saves you from searching up "best sunglasses for a 3 year old" in a car park.
Praise the wearing, not the not-losing. They can control one, not the other.
Don't turn it into a battle. Some days they won't. Try again tomorrow.
Are Lummi toddler sunglasses polarised?
Yes. All Lummi toddler sunglasses use Category 3 polarised lenses to cut glare and improve colour clarity, especially in high-glare environments like the beach and car.
My toddler bent the sunglasses out of shape - are they ruined?
Probably not. Our frames are designed to flex without breaking. Try gently reshaping them by hand, or hold them under warm water for a few seconds to help them settle back. If they won't reshape, get in touch - the Lummi Care Promise covers 12 months.
What if my toddler breaks their sunglasses?
Every pair of Lūmmi Bunny sunglasses is covered by our 12-month Lūmmi Care promise. If they break under normal wear, we replace them. No proof of purchase needed, no fine print.
